By John Preston. Portrait by Toby GlanvilleRecently, Rory Kinnear went to the cinema to watch one of his father's old films - Heavens Above! in which Roy Kinnear co-starred with Peter Sellers. As he sat there in the darkness, Kinnear had a strange sensation. He looked up at the screen and saw his father with his bald head and his rubicund features. Then his thoughts turned glumly to his own thinning hair and roundish face. At this point he worked out how old his father would have been when he made Heavens Above!, and realised that he would have been 29 - the same age that Rory is now.'Up until then I'd always thought that, physically at least, I was quite different from my Dad,' he says. 'But suddenly it was like, Christ, I'm not different at all. I looked at his chins in particular' - Roy Kinnear had a lot of chins; they fell away from his jaw like ruched curtains - 'and I thought: Oh lord, so that's the way I'm going.'Rory Kinnear was 10 when his father died after falling from a horse while shooting The Return of the Musketeers in Spain. Roy Kinnear was one of the hardest working and most popular character actors of his generation, appearing in That Was the Week that Was, Help! and the original Willy Wonka movie, as well as in a host of other movies and television shows. But now, having become an actor partly to help preserve his father's memory, Kinnear finds himself in the even stranger position of starting to supersede him.Last year, he won a raft of plaudits for his performance as Sir Fopling Flutter in The Man of Mode at the National. This was followed by Gorky's Philistines, in which - perhaps aptly - Kinnear played a young law student locked in a battle for supremacy with his father. Nicholas Hytner, who directed him in The Man of Mode, believes he's one of the most exciting and versatile actors to have come along in years. That versatility is soon to be further tested in BBC4's drama The Long Walk to Finchley, in which Kinnear plays a young, and distinctly un-buffoonish, Denis Thatcher.Given his background - his mother, Carmel Cryan, was also an actress - it would be easy to assume that Rory Kinnear had dutifully followed a path that had been mapped out for him since birth. In fact, he came at acting by a circuitous route.'For a long time I wasn't sure what to do,' he says. 'I love music and I once thought about doing a choral scholarship, but the people put me off. I also love books, which led me to doing an English degree at Oxford [he was at Balliol]. At one stage my Mum was keen on my becoming a lawyer. She and my Dad always used to say, "You're far too bright to become an actor - we only did acting because we didn't have anything else to do."'But something was tugging him towards the spotlight and so, after Oxford, Kinnear decided to go to drama school for a couple of years to see how he got on. 'I don't think I did it consciously because of any connection with my Dad. But that said, when I was in my early twenties I did definitely feel a responsibility to be like him. Not so much as an actor; more as a human being. But perhaps I also felt that my becoming an actor was a way of getting to know him better.'While Kinnear does bear some physical resemblance to his father, that's not what makes the most immediate impression. What's more striking about his appearance is how peculiarly malleable it seems. With his soft, slightly pudding-y features and his hesitant manner, you could imagine him transforming himself into just about anyone he wanted - there are shades here of his father's old co-star Peter Sellers.Yet while he's thoughtful, articulate, apparently devoid of ego and a lot more interesting than most actors about the process of acting, there's also something rather sombre about him. As he walks around his book-lined apartment near Tower Bridge, it's almost as if he's carrying some large internal bruise with him. Kinnear admits that he's drawn to melancholy parts and while he's loth to draw any direct connection to his father, it still seems to hover there like perpetually unfinished business, a thread that he can't bear to sever.Roy Kinnear's death left a big mark elsewhere too - the director of The Return of the Musketeers, Richard Lester, was so upset by it that he hasn't made a feature film since. Kinnear can remember lying in bed when his mother came back from Spain, in 1988, after collecting his father's body. 'It was the middle of the night. When she came in, I sat up and said: 'Mum, have you heard the news? Ben Johnson's just been stripped of his Olympic gold medal.' I think at that age you do tend to roll with the punches. I knew something momentous was going on, but I couldn't quite take it in. However, life did change suddenly; there was no getting away from that. Although I was the youngest child, I was the only boy and at some level I felt that I had to try to take on a greater degree of responsibility.'At the same time my father did become a huge hero-figure for me - even more so than when he was alive. My Dad's father [a Scottish rugby international] had died when my father was eight and Dad had always hero-worshipped him. That's exactly what happened to me. For a boy, I think the apex of hero-worship comes between the ages of eight and 10. In some ways I've been left with this great "idolic" image of my father, but there's a sense of absence too. You miss his advice, and also his getting to know the person I have become.'Kinnear insists that he doesn't go round obsessively watching his father's old movies and television shows - 'I did do a bit of that for a while, but it's over now.' Even so, on the weekend before our interview, he just happened to find himself watching an old episode of George and Mildred on television - Roy Kinnear had a semi-regular role in the sitcom as George's friend, Gerry the builder.'Dad appeared and did this scene and at the end he pulled out one of his famous Roy Kinnear faces, which made absolutely no sense at all in the context - he was just doing it to give a final button to the scene. It had me weeping with laughter. But I could also look at him and go, "That's brave, Dad, doing something like that." In a lot of respects I feel incredibly lucky that I'm able to have that kind of posthumous relationship with him.'To make matters even more difficult at home, Kinnear's oldest sister, Karina, was born quadriplegic and severely retarded. 'Karina is six years older than me, but she has a mental age of about nine or 10 months so she was effectively the baby of the household. Until she was 19, she was in a number of different homes for the disabled, but then the funding ran out. There were two choices: either she could go to a home in Norfolk, which was miles away from where she lived, or she could come and live with us. My Mum and Dad had talked about setting up a small home for disabled adults in the area. At her wits' end, my Mum started up this charity and put on a show at the Olivier. It was the first charity show they'd ever had at the National and it raised around £40,000.'The money went towards buying a bungalow in Twickenham. Over the next five years, Carmel Cryan raised another £1 million and Roy Kinnear House, which provides a home for eight young adults with profound disabilities - including Karina - opened in 1995.'I don't think my Mum had ever foreseen herself ending up in this world, but then that's what happens when you have a disabled child: it takes you down paths that you never even knew about before. By her own admission she had no idea what she was doing to begin with. But she was very determined and a lot of people saw the passion in her and that made them respond and want to support her work.'These days Kinnear lives with his girlfriend and their cat not far from the National Theatre, where he spent much of last year. 'Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't become an actor. If perhaps I'd stayed on at university and become an academic. That whole world just feels a million miles away from me right now.'Does he think you need to be intelligent to be a good actor?'No,' says Kinnear promptly. 'I don't think you do. There are a lot of actors out there who are able to engage with something in themselves which isn't necessarily their brain. But personally I find it very intellectually satisfying: doing your research and then burrowing as deeply into character as you can. I'm a naturally inquisitive person, too, and acting does feed into that.'Which brings us, by another circuitous route, to Denis Thatcher. On the coffee table in front of him is a photo of Kinnear as Denis - MCC tie round his neck, a wild grin plastered across his face and a newborn baby in each hand: Carol and Mark. 'Everyone has this idea of Denis Thatcher, which largely comes from the "Dear Bill" columns in Private Eye. Actually, he never really spoke at all, at least not in public. He had a motto which his father had given him: "Whales only get shot if they spout." In other words, better to be silent and be thought an idiot than open your mouth and give them conclusive evidence that you are.'The Long Walk to Finchley is billed as 'a fantasy' - something that becomes all too plain when it suggests that Margaret Thatcher and Edward Heath once had a thwarted romance. Denis, however, is played - or rather under-played - very straight. 'I've tried to avoid making him an anachronism. You have to forget the person he became and just go with what you do know about him: his going to war, his failed first marriage and also the death of his father... that way, you build him up emotionally while steering clear of those tics that you might associate with a caricature.'Although he is reluctant to admit it - he gives a convulsive shrug when the subject comes up - Kinnear is on quite a roll at the moment. 'Well, it's going all right,' he says. 'I've had a few offers recently, but I don't want to say what they are as everything is up in the air. And you've always got to remember this is a very uncertain business; there's no telling what might happen.'By way of illustration, he recalls going to Newcastle a few years ago - the bar next to the Theatre Royal had just been renamed Kinnear's after his father. 'I went in and there were a few photos of my Dad on the walls. I said to the barman, "That's my Dad." "Oh yeah," he said. "Who's that then?" I explained that he'd been an actor and that the bar was named after him. Then I asked for a pint of Fosters.'In the back of my mind I was thinking, well, at least I'm bound to get a free drink here. When the barman had finished pouring the beer, I looked at him expectantly.'He looked back at me and went: "That'll be £2.80 please."And now the place has been turned into a travel agent's.
